Not Again!!! and Hope Chest Item #Three

One morning last week, ahead of a cold front, this is how the sky looked.  I've heard of a "line drawn in the sand" but have never seen such a line between clouds and clear sky.  Now this next picture may make you want to scream, "Not again!  Not another snow picture!  Not in March!"  But, it's happened again!  Another blast of cold, cold air, with wind, sleet and snow came for us.  I've tried not to complain but this is getting to be enough already!  Our chickens are scheduled to go out in the morning and the farmer doesn't know how he'll get the doors open, for the catching crews to get inside, since they have ice holding them shut.  Maybe the sun will warm up the metal enough to melt it so he can use the BobCat to scrap it away.  I won't post another snow picture. :)

On to better topics ~ I have the third hope chest item to show today: a crocheted, pinwheel doily.  Do women still put doilies on end tables or dressers?  I use some in the kitchen to protect the counter top surfaces from being scratched by the stoneware pieces I use for sugar, salt, tea bags, etc.  This was fun to make, although it is hard for me to transition from a large hook to a tiny hook.

Ahh ~ if only I had a bouquet of spring flowers to sit on the doily....

I have been asked who the hope chest is for; I have four granddaughters and two grandsons.  Surely I can divide the things I have made between them (if they want the things) or some things may go as shower gifts.  Just something to keep my hands busy.  This winter I went through an "anxious" spell and crocheting seemed to calm me.

Now it's time for me to wrap up, slip the boots on, and go to the chicken houses.  I've been warned to be very careful on the ice.  Have a good day.
Charlotte

  1. Awe it makes me sad that ya'll have had it so rough this winter. We've had a rough one but nothing like ya'll. I pray they were able to get the chickens out and the ice melted. I love your Doilies. I use them also for tables, etc. and that is so pretty. I'm sure your grandchildren will adore them. I really need to start a Hope Chest. You take care and stay safe. Hugs, Susie

  2. The Doilies
At one time used them everywhere.
    Now still use a few.
    My daughter's and granddaughter's
probably would not know what to do with them :)
You are so talented with your beautiful handwork.
Surely Spring is on the way...

  3. yes be careful on the ice - surely this is the last really cold spell. Love the doily - I still use things like that now and then under a vase or pretty of some sort. The grandchildren will love going through the hope chest to find things they want - what better than something grandma made for them!

  4. Well, you are at least getting good moisture. Hope it all goes away soon. I had a hope chest when I was a teenager, and can you guess?......I filled it full of my embroidery and glass items. It is a cedar chest that was my mom's hope chest. Now it is my daughters, however, she is moving all of the time in the Navy and is not worried about finding someone to marry. So I have decided to keep it for her for the day she gets married. In the meantime, I am picking things to stuff in it for her. Some is embroidery that I have done for her, some is beautiful Madeira hand embroidered place mats and napkin sets. I plant to give it to her as a shower gift.....whenever that day approaches......or as a house warming gift.......if she decides not to marry. I love your beautiful crochet! And yes, I still lay doilies on the furniture, and I also use them to place under salad bowls on the dining table if we have guest. Now that I have my vintage shop open, I use them on the furniture pieces there. They are also pretty to lay on a draped on shelving with knick knacks. You asked if the shirt I have posted about is going to be in my shop.......and I have been asked by others, the same question....so yes, I plan to start embroidering these for sale in my shop as well. I will post about that later. Take care and hope it warms up for you soon!

  6. Great shot of "a line between clouds and clear sky." Your crochet work is beautiful. I can understand how it would be a relaxing thing to do. Hopefully, this round of winter weather is our last biggy...enough is enough!

  7. Yep, us too. I was looking forward to Wednesday -- supposed to be 65! Now it's been changed to freezing rain and only 39 for the high. Good ol' bipolar Mother Nature. Spring's coming someday, isn't it?

  8. Oh my goodness. Can you beat that definite line in the sky. That's an amazing photo. I'm sad you all got iced & snowed in once again. It's cold again here too. I hope this will be the last of a show of winter's gusto and spring will come running in with a warm rain to melt the memories of ice and snow away.
I love the doily. You do beautiful work. I've done a small amount of the filet crochet, it was a challenge for me. I admire your beautiful work.
Wishing you have a pleasant & warm week.

  9. I'm so glad you got a picture of those clouds! I saw them as I was driving to work, and just wished I had my camera with me. Wasn't that something?

The doily turned out so well! I think it's just beautiful.

  10. We've got ice and snow on the ground again too. I am ready for spring too. I love doilies and use a few.

  11. I still make those kinds of doilies.
This winter? I have used every word in my vocabulary to describe it and a few that I wouldn't say in public!

  12. I use cookies. I have some my Grandmother crocheted. I think the one you've made is lovely. I'm sorry about the weather. It's freezing here too.

  13. Your doily is beautiful, I am amazed at your crocheting. Haven't tried anything so complicated. I know what you mean about crocheting relaxing you, been doing the same for me. No sewing, just crochet. I never tire of pictures of Mother Nature's handiwork. We just got ice, little snow but schools closed today.

  14. Beautiful doily; such an old-fashioned little thing!
We had sleet yesterday, then snow last night. It's beautiful, but cold and treacherous this morning.
Be safe on the ice, Charlotte!

  15. That is really pretty. I can't crochet like that and yes, I do use doilies that were made by someone else and given to me. I love doilies and lace! Nancy

  16. I've never seen a line of clouds against blue sky look like that either.

I'm with you with having had enough of snow and winter. This seems like the winter that will never end!

The doily you made is so pretty, Charlotte! I can't crochet with that tiny little string. I have to use yarn.

  17. Oh, my, Charlotte, what a beautiful Doilie. What a treasure! Please be careful on the ice. This has been a harsh, cold, winter. I sure look forward to spring.

  18. I have one doily and that one is out under a photograph of my mom. It's still winter, so snow pictures are a-ok by me. In the northeast we call it poor man's fertilizer.

  19. I still use doilies. I was questioning the other day if they were still used or made or if my grandmother's were the "end".

  20. Yes, I still use doilies. I Think they are so pretty, and your is very pretty. And, I am so sick of the cold and snow, too.

  21. What an awesome sky! WoW! I still have doilies around my home. I just love them, something so 'homey' about seeing one on a side table or dresser. I know, I must be old fashioned. I think the hopechest is a wonderful thing to do for your children. I look forward to visiting again, maybe spring will be here soon.

  22. That photo of the sky is quite unusual. That's such a pretty doily! It reminds me of my mother who used to crochet doilies and stiffen them with starch. I still use doilies on my dressers. I like the idea of the hope chest. I have three granddaughters and I've thought of making them each a quilt.
