Scrappy Log Cabin quilts are my favorite quilts to make, whether for a big bed or for a baby.

This one is made from six inch blocks, paper pieced, and quilted down the center (more or less, or perhaps I should say more and less, since every line might not be centered) of each log, and is for a baby.

The binding is also scrappy, made from snippets of bindings left from large quilts.

Some people prefer baby quilts with appliqued animals, etc., which end up being wall hangings.  This quilt is to be used for a warm covering or a play mat.

A hint for the next hope chest item: it went on the quilt frames as soon as this quilt was taken off.

  1. I love log cabins and such a good idea to make a baby quilt gender neutral - then you have one ready whether it is a boy or girl.

  3. I can't quilt, but am making stamped cross stitched baby "quilts" for my future great grandchildren. Actually, it is just an excuse to have a project on the hoop at all times :-)

  5. You did a great job on this - it's just beautiful, but so much better to know it'll actually be used for its warmth and cosiness, rather than on a wall. xCathy

  6. I love the pattern and the bright colors Charlotte. The great thing is it can be used throughout all of the baby's growing up years. I think it will become a precious possession.

  7. Love the colorful log cabin baby quilt. I like how you can use the left over pieces of binding too; and it fit's perfectly with the quilt.

  8. I love this, Charlotte. So pretty! I like the idea of using it for a baby quilt or play mat too. Once baby outgrows it, it can be used for other things too like a lap robe or a table cover.

  9. Hi Charlotte, I like this scrappy log cabin so much and that pieced binding is perfect for it.
I remember seeing a red and blue log cabin quilt on a baby cradle for a family that lived on a boat, it was in a parenting magazine way back when my children were babies.
I've never made a log cabin but I like them and think they are right for baby quilts. I can just imagine a toddle boy driving his toy vehicles around the blocks on a log cabin, pretending they are roads.
It is cold and rainy in Oklahoma this morning, after a few days of warm spring like days, if you are getting the same stuff, I guess your farming duties are not too easy this morning. But rain is still needed, right?

  12. Oh. I just love this. When I finish a project, I cut 1 1/2 inch strips and throw them in a box for my someday scrappy log cabin.
