Farm Update

Last summer I wrote about the serious drought we were in and some of the problems it caused on the farm.  We've had some rain, not in excess yet, but it has helped greatly.  For instance, remember the dry pond,

and all the muck that was cleaned out of it?

Well, this is how it looks now: very, very deep.  Situated in a draw between the hills, it has filled with run-off water.  Also, whenever it has rained enough to raise the water table, water seeps out of the ground and runs into the pond, from what must be a little spring.

We continue to grind hay for the cattle and find that they waste less than when the hay is rolled out onto the ground or fed in a ring.  So far the hay supply is holding out and the cattle look good.

One more thing you might remember -- The Dog?  Well, he stayed until almost winter, then left as mysteriously as he came.

  2. I'm so happy you all got rain.. I've been wondering about it for a while. Hopefully things are looking up for everyone.. It always goes from one extreme to another it seems.. We've had a very unusal winter to say the least.. Cold one day and warm the next which brings on more sickness.. That is a pretty dog.. I've had dogs to come and disappear like that too.. You Take care.

  5. It is nice to see the ponds full and the streams running once again. I think we would all like to forget last summer.

  6. Wow...that pond looks VERY deep on the west end. Does it drop off pretty steep from the dam? I remember fishing from up there as a kid. I might be too afraid to walk across it now! LOL Do you plan to put some fish in it?

I saw the picture of Dog and got all excited, thinking he came back. Ah well...maybe you all just gave him a good temporary home while he was on a journey somewhere. Like in the movie "Homeward Bound!"

  7. That's wonderful news about the water and the pond. I pray the water will continue to be a steady supply.
I hope that handsome hound found his way back home. Dogs that appear and disappear like that is a curious thing to happen.
Hope your week is a lovely one. :)

  8. I'm so glad you have gotten rain. Maybe the drought is over. I sure hope and pray it is over there. That dog sure was beautiful. Too bad he's gone again. You take care. I know from growing up on a farm that's it's hard work and depends upon the weather and God's grace.

  9. YAY for the rains you've been getting, good to see.

Dogs seem like they do that, adopt people and then the next set of people and the next set.

  14. Are you sure that dog left on its own, Charlotte? *LOL*
Glad to see your water supply is recovering... and glad to hear your hay is holding up. We have done much better with our hay this year too, since James built those hay mangers with the trough to catch what falls out... the sheep won't eat hay off the ground so that has kept the waste to a minimum.
