Rainy Day Memory

We've had a rainy, dark day, with lightning and thunder this morning. And as the rain falls and the flashes and rumbles echo across the sky, I can see a little girl, maybe four years old, sitting cross-legged on the floor of a small room, playing with paper dolls. Her sister, Wanda, had already left for school, walking up the hill in the rain to catch the school bus. She had cut out the paper dolls from the catalog and made a car for them from the Super Suds box Mama had given her. Now, the little girl played in the dim room; no need to light the kerosene lamp. It gave very little light even at night, so the room was illuminated somewhat by the two small windows this morning. Today she pretended the dolls were taking a long trip in the bad weather. She pushed their car around and around the braided rug, which resembled a roadway. She wasn't afraid of the thunder; after all, Mama was in the next room and she made everything feel safe.

This is a memory which comes with almost every rainy, dreary day, taking me back to that little, gray house we called home.

  2. Isn't it fun to re-live memories? Sometimes on a rainy day, I remember coming home from school one rainy afternoon and finding that Mama had made new Barbie clothes for my doll.
    And then I think that it's strange to think about something that long ago - just because it's a rainy afternoon.... I'm sure she had no idea that, in addition to the doll clothes, she made a memory that day.
    We used a shoe box for our Barbie car.

  3. Aw this is so sweet. I love paper dolls. Like you I had a ton of homemade ones. I would spend hours making clothes for them. Such simple and fun times.
    What a great memory a true treasure. :)

  4. I love it when you share your childhood memories. They just speak to my heart in a very special way.

    Those are Texas Blue Bonnets. I don't believe they cause any problems. The highway crews seed the roadsides with them and people scatter seeds. They are such a beautiful harbinger of spring. I especially love it when the pink evening primrose begin to bloom and mix among the blue. Just lovely!

  5. I remember making furniture for my paper dolls from cardboard boxes. I would color my furniture and make it so pretty. Momma taught me how to do this, I would sit for hours cutting, coloring and playing. Thanks for this post, it brought back memories of my own. {{hugs}}
